Karel Velle

National Archivist of Belgium

Karel Velle (°Gent, 1959) is Belgian National Archivist and director-general of the National Archives and State Archives in the Provinces, part-time senior lecturer at the History department of Ghent University, member of the Royal History Commission, and former chair (now simple member) of the Audit Commission of the International Council on Archives. He has published on the history of institutions, on the social and political history of law and justice and on the social and political history of medicine and society in the 19th and 20th century. As archivist he is mainly an expert in judicial archives. For many years he has lectured history heuristics (modern and contemporary history) at Ghent University, and since 2009 he has been in charge of course lectures in archival law within the framework of the Flemish interuniversity education in archival science and modern document management.
