Jacques Van Helden

Professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium) - Head of the Laboratory of Genome and Network Bioinformatics

Born in 1965, Jacques van Helden was initially trained as a bioengineer (“Ingénieur Agronome”, ULB, 1987). His PhD in developmental genetics (ULB, 1995) was dedicated to the analysis of genetic elements involved in the specification of the nervous system of the fruit fly (Drosophila). During his postdoctoral studies at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, he shifted to the field of bioinformatics, which became his main area of research. He pursued his postdoctoral research at the European Bioinformatics Institute (1998-1999) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (2000-2003) where he has occupied a permanent position since 2003.

His research activities focus on the development, evaluation and application of bioinformatics and statistical methods to analyze genomes, gene regulation, metabolic pathways and molecular interaction networks. He has developed a suite of software tools routinely used by academic researchers across the world (http://rsat.ulb.ac.be/).

Jacques van Helden teaches several Master courses related to bioinformatics (Genome analysis, Statistics for bioinformatics, Analysis of biomolecular networks, Analysis of regulatory sequences), as well as a Bachelor course entitled “Social and ecological issues for biology”.
