Jean-Marc Van Gyseghem

Director of the research unit "Liberties in the information society" at the Centre de Recherches Informatique et Droit in Namur

Jean-Marc Van Gyseghem obtained his Law Degree at the University of Louvain (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) in 1995 and his DESS in Medical Law from the University of Poitiers (France) in 1996. He is specialized in Medical Law (including liability), Insurance and Private Law, in Medical Data Protection and in eHealth Services and Products.

Since December 2001, he has worked at the Research Center for Computer & Law – Crid - (Law Faculty of Namur, FUNDP, Belgium) where he is now Head of the Unit "Liberties in the information society".

He is also member of the Brussels Bar (since 1997) and Partner at the Rawlings Giles law firm in Brussels.

From 2003 to 2008, he was an invited member of a Working Group of the Commission “Norms for Telematics in relation to the Health Sector” (Belgian Ministry of Public Health). He is involved in several European and National Projects in eHealth (S3, GEMSS, ACGT, etc.). He is frequently invited to give presentations on medical data protection and on eHealth and he is the author of several papers and book chapters in this domain. He is member of an ethical committee in a Belgian hospital and is deputy manager of the collection "Cahiers du Crid".
